Hands-on Multiplication Practice That Sticks
At Extra Mile Tutoring, we know that math skills are built one engaging moment at a time. That’s why we love incorporating hands-on, visual strategies into our lessons—just like Ms. Mallory did in a recent session with one of our awesome students, Ella!
Here’s what they did:
Ella used dice rolls to create arrays, then turned those arrays into multiplication sentences. For example, if she rolled a 3 and a 4, she built a 3-row, 4-column array and wrote it as 3 Ă— 4 = 12.
It’s a simple, interactive activity that packs a punch when it comes to building understanding.
Why it works:
- Arrays help students see what multiplication means
- Rolling dice adds an element of fun and unpredictability
- Turning arrays into multiplication sentences strengthens number sense and fluency
By using visual models like arrays, students can grasp the “why” behind multiplication—not just memorize facts. And when learning feels like a game, students stay motivated and engaged.
Whether our sessions are in-person or virtual, we always aim to make every lesson interactive, meaningful, and tailored to each student’s needs.
