Your Questions Answered for Online Learning Success!
What platform or software do you use for online tutoring?
We use Zoom for all online tutoring sessions.
Is the platform user-friendly for kids? Will my child need any special equipment?
Zoom is very user-friendly for both tutors and students, and no special equipment is necessary for a successful virtual session. However, a device with a camera is required to ensure proper interaction, and we recommend using a computer with a mouse over an iPad to fully utilize the interactive features of the lessons. This setup ensures the best experience for both engagement and functionality during the session.
How do you handle potential technical issues during sessions? What kind of tech support is available?
We are equipped to address any technical difficulties that may arise and will work with you to resolve issues as they come up.
How do you keep my child engaged and focused during online sessions?
Our online sessions mimic face-to-face interactions, incorporating elements such as interactive activities, videos, and games to maintain student engagement.
What interactive tools do you use to enhance learning?
We utilize a variety of interactive tools, including:
-Virtual whiteboards
-Screen sharing
-Student-controlled screen interactions
-Educational games
How do you manage screen fatigue and keep sessions fun?
We use a mix of visuals, activities, and hands-on engagement to make our sessions dynamic and maintain interest.
What if my child isn’t connecting with the tutor?
If your child isn’t connecting with their tutor, we value your feedback and will work with you to find a better match. We are committed to ensuring your child’s success and can promptly assign a new tutor if necessary to provide the best learning experience.
What if engagement drops or progress stalls?
We closely monitor student engagement through regular assessments and feedback. If engagement drops or progress stalls, we adapt our teaching strategies to re-engage the student. This may include modifying lessons, incorporating more interactive or hands-on activities, and adjusting our approach to keep the student motivated. We also collaborate with parents and teachers to ensure support at home and in the classroom to maintain progress.
How do you ensure my child’s privacy and security during online sessions?
We prioritize privacy and security, and all tutoring sessions are not recorded to protect your child’s confidentiality. Any information shared with Extra Mile Tutoring is kept strictly confidential.
How do you maintain a personal connection with students in an online format?
Our tutors adapt to each student’s individual learning styles and needs, ensuring a personalized experience that can be as effective as in-person tutoring. Online platforms offer access to a range of digital resources and interactive materials to enrich the learning experience.
What strategies do you use to ensure active participation in a virtual setting?
We employ various strategies, including the use of visuals, discussions, and interactive activities to encourage active participation and engagement throughout each session.
What are the minimum technical requirements for participating in online tutoring?
For a smooth and successful online tutoring experience, students must have access to a device with a webcam and microphone, as these are essential for interactive communication with the tutor. While mobile devices can be used for sessions, we highly recommend using a computer or laptop with a mouse for optimal functionality. A computer offers more flexibility and allows students to fully utilize interactive features, such as shared screens, digital whiteboards, and other tools that enhance the learning experience. Additionally, a stable internet connection is essential to prevent disruptions during the session. Using a laptop or desktop will ensure students can engage in lessons with all available resources and features.
Can my child access sessions from any location?
Yes, your child can participate in sessions from any location with a stable internet connection.
What happens if there are technical difficulties during a session?
If technical issues arise, we will evaluate the situation on a case-by-case basis to determine how to proceed, including rescheduling if necessary.
Can I observe the online sessions?
We ask that an adult (18 years or older) be present at the location during the session, but we recommend that parents not be in the same room to limit distractions.
How will you communicate my child’s progress in an online setting?
We believe in open communication for student success. At the end of each week, you will receive a typed summary from your child’s tutor detailing the concepts covered and suggestions for follow-up activities. Optional homework can also be assigned upon request.
How can I support my child’s learning outside of online sessions?
Parental involvement enhances the learning experience. Here are some suggestions:
– Review the tutoring summary together to discuss progress.
– Establish a routine for homework or study activities.
– Create a positive, distraction-free learning environment.
– Engage in suggested activities to make learning fun.
– Encourage questions about the material being learned.
– Provide resources, such as books or educational games, related to the topics covered.
– Celebrate progress to boost motivation and confidence.
– Stay in touch with the tutor for ongoing feedback and support.
Are online sessions priced differently from in-person sessions?
Yes, in-person sessions are slightly higher in price compared to virtual sessions.
How are payments handled for online tutoring? Do you offer flexible payment options?
All payments are processed through our tutoring portal. Invoices are issued weekly, with payments due at the end of each week via Zelle or credit card.
How do you assign and review homework or practice materials online?
Tutors will provide homework upon request, which will accompany the weekly tutoring summary. Homework can be reviewed at the start of the next session if parents request it.
Will my child take assessments or quizzes during the online sessions, and how are these handled?
During the first session, parents can choose to have their child undergo a diagnostic assessment in Math and/or Reading/English Language Arts. This assessment will evaluate understanding of various concepts and provide insights into the student’s grade-level proficiency and knowledge gaps. Parents will receive a detailed report, and there is no additional fee for this assessment, just our standard hourly rate. Students can retake the assessment annually or as needed.
Do you offer a trial session to help my child adapt to the online format?
While we do not offer a discounted first session, we understand the importance of comfort and adaptation to the online tutoring format. We strive to make the online learning experience as user-friendly as possible, and tutors work with students to ensure a smooth adjustment to the virtual tools and environment. There is no long-term commitment required after the first session, allowing students and families to evaluate the experience and decide if it’s the right fit.
If my child struggles with online learning, can we switch to in-person tutoring?
Absolutely! If online learning isn’t the best fit for your child, we can switch to in-person tutoring, provided your current tutor offers that option. If not, we can help arrange sessions with another in-person tutor who has availability in your area. While many students are pleasantly surprised by the success of virtual tutoring, we are flexible and committed to finding the best learning format for your child. You are welcome to unenroll at any time if in-person sessions are preferred.
