Why is PSAT Test Prep important?

While the PSAT is great practice for the SAT, it is also used to qualify for a National Merit® Scholarship. You must take the PSAT/NMSQT as a high school junior in October to enter the National Merit® Scholarship program. The NMSC awards approximately $50 million in scholarships each year, and some colleges provide reduced or even free tuition for recognized students, multiplying the net impact of the National Merit.

What is tested on the PSAT, and how long does it take?

The PSAT/NMSQT evaluates the knowledge and skills you’re developing in school, focusing on those most essential for college and career readiness. It consists of two sections: (1) Reading and Writing, and (2) Math. The test also employs multistage adaptive testing to tailor the difficulty level based on your performance.
Reading and Writing has 64 minutes allotted and has 54 questions
Math has 70 minutes allotted and has 44 questions

When is the PSAT offered, and how often can you take it?

The PSAT is typically offered in October.

Students can take it multiple times throughout high school, though generally only once per school year.

What is the difference between the PSAT and SAT?

The PSAT and SAT are nearly identical, sharing the same test structure. While the PSAT is scored on a slightly different scale, it features the same question types and assesses the same knowledge areas as the SAT.
